Clifford Marshall Vogt Jr.

Clifford Marshall Vogt, Jr., 93, died on December 25, 2020, in Bradenton, FL.  Born in Chicago on May 19, 1927, to Marguerite Pittet and Clifford Marshall Vogt, Sr., he graduated from E.G. Hirsch High School in 1945.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1945, attaining the rank of Petty Officer Third Class as an aviation radio operator. He was a proud Navy Veteran. After discharge from the Navy in 1946, he attended the University of Illinois, graduating in 1950 with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. After a brief time working in the chemistry field, he attended Purdue University where he earned a master’s degree (1956) and PhD (1957) in organic chemistry. He was a member of Alpha Chi Sigma Chemistry Fraternity, Phi Lambda Upsilon Chemical Honorary, Sigma Xi Research Honorary, and a lifetime member of the American Chemical Society.

At Purdue, he met Clara Birch Snepp. They were married in 1955. In 1962, daughter Heidi Marguerite was born. His career would take them to Darien, CT (American Cyanamid); Madison, NJ (Celanese); Neenah, WI and Roswell, GA (Kimberly-Clark). His research and development work with synthetic fibers led to the creation of new products routinely seen and used in today’s world, and resulted in 20 U.S. patents and numerous foreign patents. He retired from Kimberly-Clark in 1996, and he and Clara moved to Bradenton FL in 1997. After seven years residing at Vizcaya Condominiums, they moved to Freedom Village of Bradenton where they have enjoyed life since 2004.

Around age 50, Cliff became an avid runner, enjoying the annual Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta as a participant and volunteer into his 70s. Other interests included gardening, swimming, hiking, traveling, and duplicate bridge. A tireless worker, he loved projects - finishing basements, fixing things, becoming a go-to handyman in every location he lived. At Freedom Village, he was an active volunteer at the “Hammer & Nail” workshop doing repair work for its residents and the community.

Cliff is survived by his wife, Clara; daughter, Heidi Brandon (Michael) of Alpharetta, GA; and niece, Karen Snepp of Kirkland, WA. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Gloria Joy Vogt Lechleitner.

A memorial service and interment will be scheduled at Sarasota National Cemetery at a later date. Donations in Cliff’s memory may be made to the Freedom Village Memorial Scholarship Fund (6406 21st Ave W, Bradenton FL 34209), or to another worthy organization of your choice.
