Jane Marie Fox, age 92, daughter of Raymond E. and Irene Uhl, born in Vienna, West Virginia on July 29, 1923 and passed away peacefully after suffering with dementia for 12 years, on September 9, 2015 at home with family at her side.
Jane attended the Vienna United Brethren Church where she became acquainted with a handsome, curly haired young man by the name of Vincent Fox. Vin had already spied the cute, toe-headed Jane on the playground at Vienna Elementary School. In 1941, Jane was a senior at Parkersburg High School, she and Vin began dating and he became the love of her life. Their first date was April 30, 1940 and they went to the Roller Skating Dome. They continued dating until Vin entered the Navy in 1942. Jane became a judicial assistant to the Honorable Judy William Pennybaker at the capitol building in Charleston, WV. When Vin came home from serving in the war in the South Pacific, they were married on September 14, 1944. They went by train to their honeymoon in Cincinnati, OH and dined on “bologna sandwiches”. They hadn’t made a hotel reservation, so when they reached Cincinnati they found there were no rooms available because of a convention. After searching for 2 hours, they found a vacancy at the Avondale Hotel about 10 miles south of town. They were married for 69 years until the death of Vin in 2014.
In 1965, they moved the family to Bradenton. Jane worked for Montgomery Wards, Ward Electric and Singer Sewing Machine Company. She retired in 1983 and they built a small home in Adrian, GA where they enjoyed gardening and raising a few cows.
Jane loved cooking, working in her flower garden, quilting and watching her granddaughters after school. Jane loved following her favorite football teams, Manatee High School and Florida State University. She was an active member of the Manatee United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and served on various committees including the 150th celebration of the church.
Jane is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and John Briggs, granddaughters, Nikki and Marc Salwen of Vienna, VA and Russell Leibowitz of Tampa, FL. She is also survived by her 4 great-grandchildren; Will & Caroline Salwen of Vienna, VA and Chloe and Gwyneth Leibowitz of Tampa and numerous nieces and nephews. Jane enjoyed the help of caregivers; Linda Elopre and Shonetta McGriff. Jane is preceded in death by her parents, her son, Tom and her sister, Daisy Lou Mick.
The family will receive friends from 12 Noon to 1 P.M. on Saturday, October 10, 2015 with a Celebration of Jane’s life to follow at 1 P.M. at Shannon Funeral Home Westview Chapel, 5610 Manatee Avenue West, Bradenton. Private interment will take place at Sarasota National Cemetery.
