Frederick Safford Altergott passed away, with his family by his side, on May 18, 2026 in Bradenton, Florida.
He was born on February 1, 1936 in Greeley, Colorado to Pearl and Fred Altergott and graduated in 1954 from Prospect Valley High School in Keenesburg, Colorado.
Predeceased by his beloved high school sweetheart and wife Wanda who passed away July 22, 2023.
Fred grew up on a sugar beet farm in Weld County Colorado. In 1960 he completed his machinist apprenticeship on the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad and went on to retire in 1993 as a Locomotive Plant Manager for the Southern Pacific Railroad. His love of diesel locomotives was followed by his love for cars, fishing and food. He retired to Cochise, Arizona and for a few years enjoyed some gentleman ranching on a small spread. Then he and Wanda moved to Tucson, AZ where they remained until relocating to Bradenton, Florida to be closer to their daughter.
He is survived by his three children, Steve Altergott of Tualtin, Oregon; Paula Copeland of Bradenton, Florida; and Randy Altergott of Guadalupe, California; 4 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Burial will be May 29, 2026, at Sunset Cemetery in Willcox, AZ.
