Stephen Drew Smith

January 15, 1939 — May 5, 2026

Stephen D. Smith, 87, of Bradenton, Florida, passed away on May 5, 2026. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Stephen grew up in Middletown, Ohio, the son of Mimi and Ken Smith. He attended Cranbrook School in Michigan before earning his degree from Wesleyan College in Connecticut. He went on to receive his PhD in anatomy from Tulane University.

Steve devoted his entire professional life to education and science, serving as a research scientist and professor at the University of Kentucky Medical School. Through his work, he taught thousands of future physicians and many other medical professionals sharing his deep knowledge of anatomy and contributing research aimed at promoting healing and advancing medical understanding.

He was married to the love of his life, Mary Jane, for nearly 50 years. After retiring, Steve and Mary Jane made Bradenton their home for more than 25 years. She preceded him in death in 2023. An avid outdoorsman, Steve loved hunting and fishing. He was endlessly curious about the world around him and cultivated a wide range of interests, including music, art, and photography. A lifelong learner, he embraced hobbies and experiences with enthusiasm and joy.

Steve was a member of Masonic Lodges in both Kentucky and Florida. He lived a life enriched by countless friendships and had a remarkable gift for connecting with others—strangers rarely remained strangers for long. Faith and family were central to Steve’s life. He was a devoted member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir, participated in Bible studies, and served in leadership roles.

He is survived by his sister, Dordie Roberts (Mike) of Naples, Florida; his son, Kent Smith (Robin) of Tallahassee; and daughters Ann Self of Bradenton and Lacy Buchanan (Doug) of The Villages.

He is also survived by his grandchildren Ashley Driver, Amanda Million, Taylor Buchanan, Travis Self, Drew Smith, Reed Smith, Christopher Million, and Josh Buchanan; as well as seven great-grandsons and three great-granddaughters.

The family extends their profound gratitude to Lisa Renee Adams for her devoted care and compassion over nearly five years—she became like a member of the extended family. They also express heartfelt thanks to the staff of Westminster Point Pleasant for their compassionate care over the past several years, and to Tidewell Hospice for their support in recent weeks.

A service to celebrate Stephen’s life will be announced at a later date.
